Hello there. As the holiday season brings us together and the year draws to a close, it's also the perfect time to step back and look at the bigger picture. Just like the best gatherings happen when everyone's connected and nothing's left out in the cold, in December's Cassiopeia Edition, we're exploring what's happening in observability, a space that's undergoing a fundamental shift and attracting major investments across security, operations, and AI infrastructure. Let’s begin with the headline that recently got everyone's attention: Palo Alto Networks is acquiring Chronosphere for $3.35 billion. It's one of the largest observability deals on record. But what makes this particularly notable is the buyer - Palo Alto Networks is a security company, not an observability vendor. This signals something important - namely, that the boundaries between security and operations are breaking down. By acquiring Chronosphere, Palo Alto Networks is betting that fusing security and observability signals will become critical for protecting modern infrastructure especially as AI workloads introduce new complexity and attack surfaces. However, they are not alone in recognizing this shift. The broader observability market is consolidating rapidly: When added up, we can see that observability is becoming the operational control plane for AI-driven infrastructure. This is because modern systems have fundamentally outgrown traditional monitoring. Distributed microservices across multiple clouds and AI workloads processing massive datasets create a level of complexity where finding root causes requires correlating signals across dozens of services and infrastructure layers. This complexity is also breaking down the walls between traditionally separate teams. Security teams need observability data to detect threats in real time. Finance teams need it to understand and control spiraling cloud costs. Platform teams need it to maintain reliability at scale. All three of them depend on the same capability: real-time visibility into how systems actually behave. Thus, the boom in the observability industry and embedding it into existing platforms makes sense. And with all the recent news it is clear, observability vendors are racing to add AI capabilities; they're all converging on the same operational foundation. As 2025 closes, observability is therefore being redefined where it is no longer just about monitoring uptime, but about providing the intelligence layer modern systems need to run securely and efficiently. Cyber Security Highlights of 2025
The cybersecurity landscape this year has seen amazing advancements. If you’ve been following the trends (and our past editions, for that matter), you probably know that it’s been shaped by AI-driven operations, the continued growth of unified platforms, and a fundamental shift in how security teams work together. Here's what stood out this year for us: Platformization reached maturity: In our December edition from last year, we predicted platformization would continue to dominate and 2025 proved us right. The consolidation we've been tracking since 2024 has accelerated significantly. Palo Alto Networks' $25 billion acquisition of CyberArk and its $3.35 billion purchase of Chronosphere showed that platforms aren't just bundling security tools anymore, but that they're bringing together identity, observability, and security into unified systems. A couple more organizations have followed similar paths, turning once-standalone products into integrated platform capabilities. Hyperautomation became the foundation: We also called out hyperautomation in January as a core trend, and it's become the operational backbone of modern security operations centers. Platforms like Tines and SentinelOne Singularity Hyperautomation now handle complex, multi-step security workflows with minimal human involvement. The integration requirements have changed too. We're seeing hyperautomation platforms with hundreds of integrations, and the bar for what counts as a complete integration keeps rising. Agentic AI changed how SOCs operate: Throughout 2025, agentic AI emerged as a central theme. In our coverage of agentic frameworks, we explored how AI agents are moving beyond just analyzing data to actually taking action investigating alerts autonomously, and executing fixes without waiting for human approval. Vendors like CrowdStrike, Torq and CyberArk are embedding these AI agents directly into their platforms. From an integration perspective, this means we're now building not just for human analysts but for AI agents that need structured, reliable access to security data and the ability to take action across systems. Federated SOC models gained ground: In February, we discussed the rise of federated SOC architectures where distributed security teams operate with shared visibility and coordinated responses. This became reality in 2025 as enterprises adopted hybrid and multi-cloud strategies that require security operations to span different locations, business units, and technology stacks. Platforms like Microsoft Sentinel and Palo Alto Networks Cortex XSIAM are making this possible through centralized data lakes, shared threat intelligence, and automation that works across domains. Building integrations for federated SOCs means enabling seamless data sharing, consistent policies, and workflows that function across organizational boundaries. New integration frameworks emerged: Throughout the year, we saw new integration approaches like Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, which let AI agents interact with security tools in standardized ways. This is a significant departure from traditional REST APIs and webhooks. We saw AWS, Google Cloud, Keeper Security and many more jump onto the MCP wave this year which makes one thing clear: As AI agents become more capable, demand for MCP-compatible integrations will only grow. |
